Tsunami Research Profile
Our Company
Tsunami Research is a software company pioneering Hive Computing, a new approach to enterprise application development. Our solutions enable customers to achieve dramatic reductions in the cost, time, and complexity associated with developing, deploying and maintaining transactional and service-oriented applications.
Our Product
HiveCreator, our flagship product and the first Hive Computing solution, is a software toolkit which enables large numbers of dedicated commodity computers to form an enterprise computing fabric called a Hive. A Hive, inspired by biologic systems, is self-organizing, self-healing and self-maintaining, and is designed to host custom-built transactional and service-oriented applications in a manner that is simultaneously highly reliable, extremely scalable, and significantly cheaper than traditional approaches.
Our Customers
Tsunami Research's customers are enterprises for whom the rigidity and expense of traditional enterprise computing solutions are a significant problem. Instead, our customers require solutions that are simultaneously survivable, scalable, and affordable.
The Hive Computing Difference
While a Hive bears some resemblance to traditional enterprise computing solutions, a Hive is unique in being self-healing, self-organizing, and self-maintaining.
Hive Computing Benefits
HiveCreator enables enterprises to realize 90% reductions in the acquisition cost and 50% reductions in the development and operational costs associated with their transactional and service-oriented applications.
Our History
Tsunami Research was founded by the key members of the team that created PaylinX, a leading real-time enterprise payment processing solution for handling credit card and other financial transactions. While PaylinX was a success — eventually being sold to CyberSource in 2000 for $130 million — the team found that existing approaches to the development of mission critical solutions resulted in systems that were extremely complex and expensive. With Hive Computing, Tsunami Research has developed a new approach that enables businesses to create solutions that are simultaneously survivable, scalable, and affordable.
New Assumptions
HiveCreator is able to deliver on this promise because it is based on three very different assumptions. First, a Hive assumes the application is all that matters. The self-organizing capabilities of a Hive enable developers to focus on the part of the system that delivers the value: the application. Developers do not have to concern themselves with the vagaries of the physical environment. Second, a Hive recognizes that failure happens. The self-healing capabilities of a Hive rid developers and administrators of the need to fear failure. Instead, they can simply trust the Hive to deal with failures as they arise. Finally, a Hive assumes computers are disposable. The self-maintaining capabilities of a Hive make it economical for it to be built from inexpensive, PC-grade components.
Investors
Tsunami Research is a development-stage enterprise that has been funded by its founders and a small group of individuals. To date, investor demand has been strong—the company closed its most recent funding round of $2.3 million in December 2003.
Product Status
Tsunami Research shipped HiveCreator 1.0 in February 2003. HiveCreator 2.0 is available to select customers, and will be generally available in Q1, 2004. Tsunami has filed a patent covering key aspects of its technology and its implementation.
